Pentagon unveils new US National Defence Strategy
The US Department of Defence has released a new National Defence Strategy, which fixes the changing the priorities of the US security policy. The relevant document was published by Pentagon, Politico reports.
New US priorities
According to the strategy, the United States focuses primarily on:
defence of own territory;
security Western Hemisphere;
strategically important facilities, in particular Panama Canal, Greenland and Gulf of Mexico.
This approach means more selective US involvement in international conflicts and regional crises.
Position on Ukraine
The document states that support for Ukraine is seen in Washington primarily as the responsibility of European allies. The United States declares its readiness to continue working with its partners, but expects Europe to play a greater role in financing and providing security support to Kyiv.
Assessment of Russia
The new strategy calls Russia «a »persistent but manageable threat" to NATO. The Pentagon acknowledges that, despite serious economic and demographic challenges, Russia retains sufficient resources to waging a protracted war and continued pressure on the Alliance's allies.
China and the Pacific
China in the document is no longer identified as a major threat, However, its containment remains an important component of US policy. The United States plans to act through:
diplomacy;
Strengthening defence capabilities in the Pacific region;
deepening cooperation with regional allies.
