The first toll road will appear in Ukraine: Kovel - Yahodyn-Dorohusk
Ukraine is officially preparing to launch the first toll road. We are talking about the area from Kovel to the checkpoint «Yagodyn-Dorogusk» on the border with Poland. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Development of Communities and Territories Oleksandr Derkach.
What we know about the project
According to Derkach, it is the international corridor to Yahodyn, one of the largest and busiest checkpoints on the Polish route, that will be charged.
The official emphasised that before the introduction of the toll model, the needs to be expanded and modernised, The system is designed to provide the right amount of capacity and traffic quality.
Why the paid format is being introduced
Toll roads in Ukraine are seen as a tool:
- rapidly attracting investment in infrastructure
- Increased speed and comfort for international transport
- unloading of alternative routes in Volyn and Lviv regions
The Kovel pilot project could become a model for other corridors leading to the EU.
Context.
The Kovel-Yahodyn corridor is a key route for freight exports to Poland and the EU. Since the outbreak of full-scale war, the load on this route has increased significantly, and the capacity of the Yahodyn checkpoint has repeatedly become critical due to queues.
The decision to charge for the route should speed up the modernisation of the road and reduce delays at the border.
