Ukraine will allow dual citizenship with the US, Canada, Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic

Ukraine is preparing to allow dual citizenship with a number of Western countries USA, Canada, Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, reports BBC with reference to government sources.

According to the new rules, Citizens of these states will be able to obtain a Ukrainian passport without having to renounce their citizenship. In turn, Ukrainians will be allowed to acquire the citizenship of these countries, while preserving the Ukrainian.

“This is an important step to strengthen ties with the Ukrainian diaspora and allies who support Ukraine during the war,” the statement said.


Context.

The initiative of dual citizenship has been discussed in Ukraine for several years, but the process accelerated after the outbreak of full-scale war.
Previously, the law prohibited dual citizenship and those who obtained a foreign passport, automatically lost their Ukrainian.

The new rules are intended to simplify procedures for Ukrainians abroad і attract specialists and investments from friendly countries.
The relevant draft law is expected to be adopted in the near future after consultations with EU and NATO partners.


International reaction

Diplomatic circles in the United States and Canada welcomed Ukraine's move, seeing it as Deepening political and human ties between states.
At the same time, experts emphasise that this model will not apply to countries that are considered to be hostile to Ukraine, In particular, to Russia and Belarus.
