Sikorski says Polish president is «preparing the ground» for possible exit from EU
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Radoslav Sikorsky made a strong political statement, noting that the country's president allegedly prepares the ground for Poland's withdrawal from the European Union.
According to Sikorsky, the president's behaviour and his blocking of a number of government decisions «create conditions that can lead the country to a political scenario polexit».
The context of political tensions
The statement was made against the backdrop of an escalating conflict between the government and the presidential administration, especially over the issues of
Reforming the judicial system,
interaction with European institutions,
compliance with EU conditions for financial programmes,
foreign policy and defence.
Sikorski stressed that Poland must maintain stability in the EU and prevent even hints of a repeat of the British scenario.
Reaction of political forces
The presidential office did not comment on the statement, but opposition politicians called the minister's words a «political warning», while supporters of the president considered them «manipulative and exaggerated».
The European Commission has not yet responded officially, but diplomatic sources stress that Brussels is closely monitoring the internal crisis in Warsaw.
