Greenland does not want to be part of the US and will remain part of Denmark - PM Nielsen

Greenland has no intention of becoming part of the United States and wants to remain part of the Kingdom of Denmark. This was stated by the Prime Minister of Greenland Jens-Frederik Nielsen during a joint press conference with the Prime Minister of Denmark.

The statement was made against the backdrop of active political discussions in the United States about the role of Greenland in the US security and geopolitical strategy.

Greenland's clear position

Prime Minister Nielsen stressed that the sale of the island is not and cannot be on the agenda.

«Greenland is not for sale. We do not want to be part of the US and want to remain part of Denmark,» he said.

According to him, any decisions on the future of the island can be made solely in accordance with the will of the people of Greenland.

Denmark's position

The Danish Prime Minister supported the Greenlandic government's statement, stressing respect for the island's autonomous status and the right of its residents to determine their own future.

Copenhagen emphasises that Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and no international initiatives can change this without the consent of Greenland itself.

Context.

Discussions around the possible strengthening of US influence in Greenland have intensified amid global geopolitical confrontation, the growing role of the Arctic and interest in the region's strategic resources.

Earlier, the United States had repeatedly stated the island's strategic importance for North American security, but Denmark and Greenland had consistently rejected such ideas.

What's next

Greenland's role in international politics is expected to continue to be the subject of diplomatic consultations between the United States, Denmark and NATO partners, but the island's official position remains unchanged.
