Macron warns of possible conflict between the EU and the US and calls for Europe's independence

President of France Emmanuel Macron warned about the possible deterioration of relations between the European Union and the United States and called on Europe to prepare for a tougher confrontation in the economic and political spheres.

According to him, the EU should no longer «bend over backwards» or try to negotiate with Washington at any cost, as such a strategy did not produce the expected results.

Call for financial and strategic autonomy

Macron stressed the need:

  • launching joint European debt instruments;

  • massive investment in large projects;

  • steps capable of challenge the dominance of the US dollar in the global financial system.

In his opinion, only an economically strong and united Europe will be able to maintain global influence in the new geopolitical environment.

«The Greenlandic moment and the risk of new disputes

The French leader called the so-called «Greenlandic moment» a worrying signal for Europe, indicating a change in the US approach to its allies.

He emphasised the need to urgent economic reforms and strengthening the EU's role in global politics.

According to Macron, the current relative lull in relations between the US and the EU is temporary, and new disputes are likely to arise in the coming months, in particular over European digital regulation.

Context.

Recent years have been characterised by growing discussions about the EU's strategic autonomy, including energy, defence and finance.

Macron's statements reflect a broader trend in European politics - a desire to reduce dependence on the US and strengthen its own economic instruments of influence.

Experts believe that the further dynamics of relations between Brussels and Washington will largely depend on trade policy, digital regulation and currency competition.
