Igor Terekhov, Mayor of Kharkiv and Chairman of the Association of Frontline Cities and Communities (APCG), initiated the creation of a comprehensive state strategy to support older people. He stressed the importance of developing a long-term programme to help pensioners feel secure and socially active.

Problems of older people in Ukraine

According to Igor Terekhov, There are more than 10 million elderly people in Ukraine, and their number is growing. The war and demographic changes have only exacerbated the problem of loneliness among pensioners. According to humanitarian organisations, more than half of older Ukrainians feel abandoned, which negatively affects their mental and physical health.

Why is a state strategy needed?

The head of the APMG stressed that existing social programmes do not always meet modern challenges. He proposed to create a comprehensive document that would include the development of social care, medical prevention and the creation of a barrier-free environment for the elderly. This will not only improve the quality of life of pensioners, but also reduce the burden on the medical system.

Key areas of strategy

The proposed strategy includes several key areas. First, the development of social services to help older people remain active and socialised. Secondly, the introduction of medical prevention programmes that will help detect diseases at early stages and reduce the number of hospitalisations. Third, creating a barrier-free environment that will facilitate access to public spaces and transport.

Reaction of society and authorities

Igor Terekhov's initiative has already received support in a number of frontline communities where the issue of supporting the elderly is particularly acute. Experts note that the implementation of such a strategy could be an important step in overcoming the social isolation of pensioners and improving their well-being.

Next, the project will be discussed at the national level with representatives of social services, healthcare professionals and NGOs. This will allow us to take into account all the needs and peculiarities of different regions of Ukraine.
