Witkoff: Iran claims 460kg of enriched uranium at start of talks

Special envoy of US President Donald Trump Steve Witkoff said that during the first meeting with the Iranian delegation, Tehran openly reported significant stocks of enriched uranium.

Details of the application

According to Witkoff, Iranian negotiators «directly, without hesitation» told the US side that they control 460 kilograms of uranium, enriched to 60%.

He stressed that, according to them, this amount of material could theoretically produce up to 11 nuclear warheads after further enrichment.

«This was the beginning of their negotiating position,» the envoy said.

What it means

The United States views such statements as evidence of Tehran's confidence in its nuclear capabilities.

Experts emphasise that uranium with an enrichment level of 60% is technically close to the weapons-grade level (90%), but this does not in itself mean that a ready-made nuclear weapon is available.

Context.

Iran insists that its nuclear programme is peaceful. At the same time, the United States, Israel and a number of Western countries regularly express concern about the possible military dimension of Iranian developments.

The latest statements came amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.
