Putin breaks Trump's «truce»: five people killed in night strikes in Ukraine
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin violated the agreement with the US President Donald Trump for a short ceasefire against Ukraine. Nighttime missile and drone strikes on the country's territory killed at least five civilians, more than ten people were injured, reports The New York Post.
What happened
According to the newspaper, the attack took place on the night of 2 February and covered several regions of Ukraine. Russian troops used missiles and attack drones, destroying residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.
Despite statements about a possible pause in hostilities, the shelling continued throughout the night, which effectively means that any informal agreements have been broken.
Reaction.
The article notes that the Kremlin's actions were a direct violation of the signals that had come from Washington the day before about the need to temporarily cease hostilities.
The attack is expected to trigger a new wave of political reaction in the US and among Ukraine's allies.
Context.
Earlier, Donald Trump announced that he had reached an agreement with the Russian side on a short pause in the war against Ukraine. However, the nighttime strikes have cast doubt on any willingness of Moscow to adhere to even limited commitments.
