Russia becomes the third largest gas supplier to the EU in 2025

In 2025, Russia was again among the key gas suppliers to the European Union, ranking third in terms of imports. This was reported by the Slovak newspaper Denník N, analysing data for January-September.

During this period, EU countries imported Russian gas by €10.6 billion, Tcm, which is 1.6% more than last year. Russia's share in total natural gas imports increased to 16,1%, despite Brussels' longstanding efforts to reduce its dependence on Russian energy resources.

Why deliveries are growing

The increase in imports is explained by the fact that some EU countries continue to receive Russian gas in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG), while pipeline supplies have dropped to almost a minimum. Russia is actively reorienting its exports to sea routes, which allows it to maintain a significant share of the European market.

Analysts point out that due to global price fluctuations and a cold start to the year, demand for additional gas volumes in the EU has increased, creating conditions for Russia to return to the top three in terms of supplies.

Context.

After 2022, the European Union declared its intention to completely abandon Russian gas by 2027. However, practice shows that complete replacement of supplies is a more complicated process than planned. Some countries are blocking the imposition of sanctions on Russian LNG imports, which allows Gazprom and related companies to continue earning billions of euros on the European market.
