Housing is being massively confiscated in Russia to cover war costs
The number of court decisions on confiscation of property is growing rapidly in Russia, which, according to Foreign Intelligence Services of Ukraine, This is due to attempts to compensate for the costs of the war.
It is reported that the number of sentences with confiscation increased by 9.3 times compared to 2020. While in 2022, such decisions were made in relation to about 4,000 people, in 2024, more than 24,000 people were already subject to such decisions.
Expanding the grounds for seizure of property
After the start of the full-scale invasion, the Russian authorities significantly expanded the list of grounds for confiscation.
In particular, we are talking about cases of so-called «fakes» about the army, sabotage or cooperation with foreign structures. Some court rulings allow even the only home of the suspects' relatives to be seized.

Russia's increasingly repressive mechanisms are taking place against the backdrop of continued military spending, sanctions pressure and economic restrictions.
Analysts note that the expansion of the practice of confiscation may indicate a deepening of the state's financial problems and further tightening of control over society.
