Achieving peace requires difficult but necessary concessions on both sides - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that achieving peace in Russia's war against Ukraine will require «difficult but necessary concessions» from both sides. He wrote about this in his official address.

Rubio stressed that the process of ending the war «requires a broad exchange of serious and realistic ideas», and that is why the United States is working to form a a list of potential options, which can form the basis for negotiations.

Washington's logic

According to the Secretary of State, the US:

  • analyse proposals from both the Ukrainian and Russian sides;

  • prepare alternative scenarios that could bring the positions closer together;

  • will continue to work on ideas that pave the way for a possible end to the war.

Rubio stressed that any such ideas should be realistic and take into account the «long-term security implications for Europe».

Context.

Rubio's statement came amid accelerating backroom talks between the US and Russia.

It also revolves around the preparation of a framework peace agreement, which, according to media reports, may be presented to Zelenskyy this week.

Ukraine officially states that no decision can be made without its participation, and any agreements should be based on international law.
