IPC allows Russia and Belarus to rejoin the Paralympic Movement

Conditions for the return of athletes from Russia and Belarus

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced that Russian and Belarusian athletes have been granted the right to compete in Paralympic events again. They will participate exclusively in under neutral status, The government has no national flags or anthems.

Conditions of admission

  • Only individual disciplines.

  • Team sports remain closed to Russia and Belarus.

  • The athletes will undergo an enhanced anti-doping control.

Context.

After the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine in 2022, Russian and Belarusian athletes were suspended from the Paralympic movement. The decision to partially reinstate them was made despite the continuing international sanctions against the countries.

Ukraine's response

Ukrainian authorities and sports organisations have strongly criticised the decision. They emphasise that the participation of athletes from the aggressor countries (Russia and Belarus), even under neutral status, contradicts ethical principles and is a disrespect for the victims of the war.

Conclusion.

The return of Russia and Belarus to the Paralympic Movement was a compromise for the IPC, but it caused considerable controversy. For Ukraine and its partners, this decision looks like a step backwards in international sports policy.
