iPhone officially included in NATO security catalogue
The iPhone and iPad have been officially approved to work with classified information of the North Atlantic Alliance. This was announced by Apple.
What exactly did NATO decide
Devices with operating systems iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are included in the NATO Information Security Products Catalogue.
These are the first and so far the only mass consumer devices to receive this status for use in environments with increased cybersecurity requirements.
Who conducted the inspection
The examination was carried out by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI).
The assessment confirmed that Apple's key security mechanisms comply with the required security standards, including:
hardware and software encryption;
Face ID biometric authentication;
Memory Integrity Enforcement technology.
What it means
In the past, government agencies often used specialised and expensive secure phones to work with classified data.
Now, as noted, standard Apple devices can be used for certain Alliance tasks, subject to appropriate security policies.
Context.
The decision may affect the approach of government agencies to the choice of mobile platforms and strengthen Apple's position in the field of corporate and government cybersecurity.
At the same time, the use of such devices in classified environments is usually accompanied by additional security and access control settings.
