Every sixth Russian prisoner of war in Ukraine is a Ukrainian citizen - Usov

Every sixth Russian prisoner of war is a citizen of Ukraine. This was reported by the Secretary of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War Dmitry Usov.

According to him, Russia systematically uses the occupied territories to forcible mobilisation of Ukrainians, and then sends them to the front to fight against the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

How Russia forms such units

Usov stressed that the Russian army:

  • takes men to the TOT through threats, fines and forceful pressure;

  • enrolls them in the units of the «army of the Russian Federation» as alleged volunteers;

  • sends them to the most dangerous areas of the frontline;

  • It is used as a «manpower» to cover the personnel units of the Russian Federation.

Thus, the Russian Federation fighting with the hands of Ukrainians against other Ukrainians, artificially creating a situation of internal confrontation.

Context.

Forced mobilisation in the occupied territories is prohibited by international law and amounts to a war crime. Ukraine has been recording such cases since 2022, and the number of people mobilised to the TOT is constantly growing.
