During the presentation of the Shahed-136 in London, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Radoslav Sikorsky warned: Russia has the technical capability to strike far into Europe, so it would be «irresponsible» to ignore strengthening defences. He called on the allies to support Ukraine for longer - at least three years - and to expand deterrence measures.

Specific steps that the Minister named

According to Sikorsky, Europe needs:

  • invest in anti-drone systems and deploy a «drone wall» on the eastern flank;

  • Provide Ukraine with additional air defence equipment, as well as short- and medium-range missile systems;

  • to seek from the United States the provision of long-term strike capabilities, including long-range Tomahawks to destroy the enemy's critical infrastructure.

Why it's important now

Sikorski pointed to recent cases of drone border crossings and fighter jet flights over the airspace of allied countries, which, in his view, underscore the threat to European security and the need to strengthen defence capabilities. He also stressed the need for coordinated support for Ukraine to convince Moscow that the West is ready to «stay the course».

Reaction and context

The Kremlin calls the idea of strikes on NATO territory absurd, but Western politicians warn that technology (including long-range attack drones) allows Russia to launch long-range strikes. Therefore, according to Sikorsky, strengthening air defences, supplying ammunition and serious weapons is part of the deterrence strategy.
