Proposal to create a «ministry of sex» in Armenia»

A political scandal erupts in Armenia after a proposal by one of the leaders of the opposition party «Strong Armenia» Sarkis Karapetyan to create a so-called «Ministry of Sex».

According to him, women's sexual dissatisfaction allegedly affects the level of their political activity, especially among middle-aged women. The politician also suggested that such a state body could help the country combat the decline in the birth rate.

The statement quickly caused a wide public and media response.

Reaction of the authorities and society

Representatives of the ruling Civic Contract party sharply criticised the initiative, calling it a manifestation of sexism and an attempt to treat women as objects.

A wave of criticism was directed at Karapetyan on social media. Users accuse the politician of manipulating a sensitive topic in order to attract voters' attention and political dividends.

Context.

The issue of demographic decline remains one of the key problems for Armenia, as it is for many countries in the region. At the same time, experts emphasise that such issues are usually resolved through social policy, family support and economic incentives, rather than through the creation of separate state structures of a dubious nature.

The opposition's scandalous statement has already become the subject of political debate and is likely to remain in the public eye for a long time to come.
