According to the agency, the removed materials included:
photographs from Epstein's estates;
images of paintings with naked women;
a photo in which, among other photos, you can see Donald Trump next to Epstein, Melania Trump and Gislaine Maxwell.
No warnings or public explanations for the disappearance of the files have been provided.
Position of the Ministry of Justice
The US Department of Justice stated that the materials were allegedly still being reviewed and edited «for reasons of caution». At the same time, the department did not explain why the files were completely removed from public access, rather than temporarily restricted.
Context and criticism
The incident caused a wave of outrage on social media and increased suspicions about the lack of transparency of the so-called «public release» of materials in the Epstein case. Despite the publication of tens of thousands of pages, the new information was minimal.
Key documents - including FBI interviews with victims and internal memoranda - are either missing or completely blacked out. Despite the deadline set by Congress, the US Department of Justice has actually chosen the format of «releasing without a timetable», extending the process indefinitely.
Epstein's victims and human rights activists call the situation another failure of the US justice system.
