US warns of new sanctions against Russia if calls for peace are ignored - Waltz

Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations Mike Waltz said that Washington may impose a new package of sanctions on Russia if it continues to ignore international calls for peace and a ceasefire.

Details of the application

According to Waltz, Russia has already paid a «high price for aggression,» losing more than one million people, and facing the most extensive sanctions in its modern history.

Nevertheless, the Kremlin continues military operations and demonstrates its complete unwillingness to reach a peaceful settlement.

«If Russia continues to ignore calls for a ceasefire, we are ready to use new economic measures. At the same time, the United States continues to supply weapons for Ukraine's defence,» Waltz said.

Context.

The statement came amid intense diplomatic efforts by the United States and its allies to end the war. Washington has consistently emphasised that any peaceful settlement is possible only if Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected.

Sanctions pressure remains one of the main instruments of influence that the West plans to strengthen in response to further escalation by the Kremlin.
