People's Artist of Ukraine Stepan Giga dies in Lviv

Long-term struggle with complications

Giga was admitted to hospital on 19 November in a serious condition. Doctors have repeatedly had to make urgent decisions - a few days ago, the artist underwent surgery to amputate his leg to stop the rapid development of complications.

Formerly a blogger Bogdan Bespalov reported that the main reason for the deterioration of his condition was complications of a viral infection that developed against the background of diabetes. According to him, doctors did everything possible, but the artist's condition remained critical.

Career and creative path

Stepan Giga was born in 1959 in the village of Bilky in Zakarpattia. This November, the singer turned 66. He released his first solo album in 1995. Three years later, he was awarded the title of Honoured Artist of Ukraine, and in 2002 people's artist.

His songs have become part of the Ukrainian pop classics. Among the artist's most famous compositions are «Natalie Street», «This Dream», «Yavorina», «Gold of the Carpathians».
