Officials in Dnipropetrovs'k region misappropriated more than UAH 14 million, by purchasing materials for fortifications at inflated prices. This was reported by the Prosecutor General's Office, which published the details of the case.
Scheme of theft at fortification works
Office of the Prosecutor General uncovered a large-scale corruption scheme in which officials purchased construction materials for fortifications in Dnipropetrovs'k region at prices significantly higher than market prices. As a result, budget funds in the amount of over UAH 14 million were misappropriated.
How the theft took place
According to the investigation, the purchases were made through controlled companies that artificially inflated the cost of materials. The documents contain contracts for the supply of building mixtures, rebar and other materials necessary for fortifications, but in fact either low-quality or smaller volumes of products were delivered.
Implications for the region's defence capability
The hidden fraud not only caused financial losses but also jeopardised the operational strengthening of the defensive borders of the Dnipro region. The lack of necessary materials or their poor quality can reduce the effectiveness of fortifications, which is critical in the current environment.
Law enforcement response and further steps
Investigators of the Prosecutor General's Office have already opened criminal proceedings over the abuse and embezzlement. The suspects face criminal liability, as well as the return of the misappropriated funds to the state budget.
Investigations are ongoing, as well as checks of other defence procurements for similar corruption.
