
Extended ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia with Donald Trump's participation
At the summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) у Kuala Lumpur leaders Thailand and Cambodia signed An extended ceasefire agreement with the participation of the US President Donald Trump.
Prime Minister of Thailand Anutin Charnvirakul and the head of the Cambodian government Hong Manet signed a document that aims to to consolidate peace after five days of armed clashes on the border between the two countries.
«This is a declaration that, if fully implemented, will create the basis for lasting peace between our peoples,» said Hong Manet.
Key terms of the deal
Cambodia agreed withdraw heavy equipment and artillery from the border area.
Thailand has committed to release 18 Cambodian soldiers, who were held after previous clashes.
The parties also agreed to establish joint monitoring group under the auspices of ASEAN to monitor compliance with the terms of the ceasefire.

President of the United States Donald Trump said that the signing of the agreement was an important step for Strengthening stability in Southeast Asia.
«America has always stood for peace and cooperation. We help countries in the region resolve conflicts through dialogue, not through weapons,» Trump said at the briefing.
Context.
Clashes between Thailand and Cambodia erupted in late July near a disputed section of the border. The previous ASEAN-brokered ceasefire was repeatedly violated.
A new document signed in Kuala Lumpur, extends the obligations of the parties and provides for the participation of international observers.
