Trump threatens to block the opening of the US-Canada bridge

President of the United States Donald Trump said he could block the opening of the international bridge Gordie Howe between Detroit and Windsor, Canada, because of what he called «Canada's hostility to the United States» and its rapprochement with China.

The opening of the facility is scheduled for early 2026. The bridge should become a single crossing between the two countries with the possibility of pedestrian and bicycle traffic, and an important transport corridor for trade.

Washington's demands

Trump said it was necessary:

  • «full compensation» costs from Canada;

  • «fair treatment» to the United States as part of the project;

  • United States possession at least half of the bridge.

According to him, negotiations on the future project should start immediately.

Who finances the construction

The construction of the bridge has been going on since 2018 and financed by entities controlled by Government of Canada.

The Canadian side is expected to be responsible for operation of the facility for 36 years after it is put into operation.

Context.

The Gordie Howe Bridge is seen as a key infrastructure project for economic ties between the US and Canada, as a significant portion of bilateral trade passes through the Detroit region.

Trump's statements may indicate escalation of trade and political disputes between allies, as well as the use of infrastructure projects as a tool for negotiating pressure.
