Trump may be banned from renaming objects in his honour in the US - Newsweek

У US Congress is preparing a bill that could ban renaming state and cultural facilities in honour of current or former presidents without the special permission of lawmakers. This was reported by Newsweek.

Details of the initiative

The impetus for the legislative initiative was the decision to add the name Donald Trump to the title John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
On 19 December, the signage in the complex began to change, and later the building was officially renamed «Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Centre for the Performing Arts» by the decision of the Board of Trustees of the Centre.

Reaction and possible consequences

This decision was criticised by some lawmakers and the cultural community. Opponents point out that such renaming could set a dangerous precedent for the politicisation of national cultural institutions.

A draft law currently being prepared in Congress aims to clearly regulate the procedure for renaming state facilities and make it impossible to make such decisions without broad public and parliamentary approval.
