President of the United States Donald Trump said that Ukraine and Russia could start negotiations soon to end the war. According to him, the situation has reached a critical point, and further continuation of hostilities «makes no sense».

«This is a senseless war. A terrible war. The worst since the Second World War. Look at how many people are dying, both from Russia and Ukraine. I think they will come to the negotiating table soon enough,» Trump said while speaking to journalists.

Possible sanctions against Russia

Trump also did not rule out imposition of new sanctions against Russia, stressing that the US administration has «ample reason» to increase economic pressure on Moscow.

«I could do that,» the president said when asked about the possibility of imposing additional restrictions.

He noted that Washington is coordinating its actions with NATO partners, who, in his words, have «stepped up their support for Ukraine» and continue to buy American weapons.

«The leader of NATO, Mark, is a fantastic guy. They are acting decisively. We sell a lot of weapons to the Alliance, and I think a lot of it goes to Ukraine,» Trump added.

Context.

The latest statements by the US president came amid intensifying fighting in eastern Ukraine and new Russian missile attacks on infrastructure.
Washington has previously confirmed the continuation of military assistance to Kyiv, but the White House also stresses the need to «find a political solution to the conflict».
