President of the United States Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the United States from 66 international organisations and agreements that, according to the White House, «no longer serve America's interests». The document was published on the official website of the administration.

According to the decree, all executive departments and federal agencies are ordered to immediately cease participation and funding of the designated entities.

Details of the case

The document provides for the US withdrawal from the..:

  • 35 organisations, The UN is the only international organisation that does not belong to the UN system;

  • 31 UN agencies, The White House has designated the following entities whose activities, according to the White House, are contrary to the national interests, security, economic prosperity and sovereignty of the United States.

Washington said that many of these entities «promote radical climate policies, global governance and ideological agendas» that do not align with the Trump administration's policy agenda.

Among the organisations and international formats from which the US plans to withdraw are the following:

  • Scientific and technical centre in Ukraine;

  • The Venice Commission of the Council of Europe;

Federal agencies have been instructed to carry out legal procedures for the termination of participation and to review all financial obligations to these entities.

Context.

The Trump administration's foreign policy focuses on prioritising national sovereignty, reducing international commitments and cutting funding to multilateral institutions. Similar decisions have already been made in the past in the area of climate policy, international agreements and global regulatory programmes.

The US withdrawal from a number of international organisations could have implications for global governance, international security, climate policy, and cooperation with Europe and partner countries, including Ukraine.
