Trump after meeting with Xi Jinping
President of the United States Donald Trump and the leader of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping spent almost a two-hour meeting in South Korea, where they discussed the geopolitical situation, trade relations and the war in Ukraine.
After the talks, Trump made a number of statements that have already caused an international outcry.
«We agreed that both sides - Ukraine and Russia - are engaged in a fight, and sometimes you have to let them fight. It's crazy,» Trump told reporters after the meeting.
The American president added that Xi Jinping promises to help resolve the conflict, but did not specify how.
«Xi will help us on Ukraine, but there's nothing more we can do. We will work together to get something done,» Trump concluded.
Context of the meeting
This is the first face-to-face meeting between the leaders of the United States and China in six years. It took place on the sidelines of the summit APEC 2025 in South Korea.
The main topics of discussion include trade duties, export of rare earth elements, security in the Pacific region and war in Ukraine.
Although the White House has not yet issued an official communiqué, administration sources note that Trump seeks to engage Beijing in peace process, while trying to maintain an economic balance in bilateral relations.
