Record deal with Engie
Hungary signs a large-scale contract with a French company Engie to supply 400 million cubic metres of gas annually from 2028 to 2038.
The deal is the country's largest energy deal in recent years and signals a gradual shift away from dependence on Russian resources.
Orban's change of position
A few years ago, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Viktor Orban claimed that abandoning Russian gas would be a «disaster» for Hungary.
However, the new arrangements demonstrate that the country is able to secure alternative sources of supply without relying on Moscow.
Context.
The European Union has been actively reducing its imports of Russian energy since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Hungary, which has long been among the main supporters of cooperation with Gazprom, is now taking a step towards energy diversification.
