Ukraine and Moldova tightened border controls, completely restricting supplies to Transnistria.

Ukraine and Moldova completely cut off supplies to Transnistria on 1 January

On 1 January, Ukraine and Moldova simultaneously introduced a complete blockade of logistics routes to Transnistria. This includes tighter border controls, a strict customs regime and the de facto closure of airspace, which has led to the isolation of the Russian military contingent in the region.

Analysts estimate that about 1,500 Russian military personnel are under the blockade, losing access to regular supplies of fuel, equipment and the possibility of rotations.

Details of the case

The border regime between Ukraine and Moldova has been tightened and additional checks have been introduced. Any movement of goods or vehicles is possible only with the consent of both states.

The so-called «grey routes» that used to be used for informal supplies have been effectively eliminated. All restrictions have been imposed without the use of military force - exclusively within the framework of national legislation and international procedures.

As a result, Transnistria is turning from a «grey zone» into an isolated enclave, and the logistical capabilities of the Russian group are significantly reduced.

Context.

For many years, the Transnistrian region has remained an instrument of Russian influence in Eastern Europe and a factor of security instability. Against the backdrop of a full-scale war against Ukraine, the issue of controlling the logistics and movement of military personnel in the region has become particularly important.

Coordination between Ukraine and Moldova is in line with the EU and NATO's common line of deterring Russian aggression, restricting Russia's military mobility and strengthening regional security.

Experts point out that further isolation of Transnistria could significantly weaken Moscow's political and military influence in the region.
