Ukraine is working on a large-scale return of its defenders from Russian captivity We are talking about 1,200 soldiers. This was stated by the Minister of Defence Rustem Umerov, who, on behalf of the President, held a series of talks with the participation of international mediators.


Details of consultations

Umerov said that in recent days:

  • diplomatic meetings were held in Turkey and United Arab Emirates;

  • partners act as intermediaries to resume the exchange process;

  • The mechanisms for the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war, including logistics and security, were discussed.

The Minister noted that in the near future technical consultations will be held, which should fix procedural and organisational details potential exchange.


Context.

Ukraine has repeatedly emphasised that the return of prisoners is one of the country's key humanitarian priorities.
In recent months, the process of exchanges has been effectively blocked by Russia, and the current negotiations are the first significant breakthrough in a long time.

In previous large exchanges, Ukraine returned between 100 and 215 servicemen at a time. The announced figure 1200 people could be the largest in the history of full-scale warfare.
