Ukraine and the UK launch Octopus project to produce interceptor drones
Ukraine and the UK have announced the launch of a joint production project codenamed «Octopus», which aims to mass produce interceptor drones to counter Russian unmanned aerial vehicles.
According to Bloomberg, in the coming months, they plan to establish production at a level of approximately 2,000 drones per month, which will be gradually sent to Ukraine.
«The Octopus project should allow for a rapid increase in the number of means to intercept enemy drones and increase the effectiveness of air defence at the tactical level», the British Defence Ministry said.
What are interceptor drones and why are they needed?
Interceptor drones are vehicles specially designed to detect, track and neutralise enemy UAVs. They can operate both as part of ground-based air defence units and as autonomous platforms to protect critical infrastructure and rear areas.
Mass production of such devices will allow:
to rapidly increase the number of anti-drone weapons;
reduce the burden on traditional air defence systems;
promptly close down «vulnerable» sectors and important facilities.
Additional initiatives and supplies from the UK
According to the report, the UK is also considering other joint projects with Ukraine, including production of glider bombs, This could expand the range of the national defence industry and reduce dependence on imports.
In addition, London has already accelerated the delivery of light anti-aircraft missiles LMM - Hundreds of ammunition delivered 5 months earlier from the original schedule.
«We are mobilising industrial capabilities to provide Ukraine with modern means of defending its territory,» said the UK Deputy Secretary of State for Defence.
Significance for Ukraine
The Octopus project can become a critical element of the country's tactical defence: the massive availability of interceptors will reduce the number of successful drone attacks on infrastructure, logistics and residential areas. For Ukrainian industry, it is also a chance for technological development, job creation, and adjustment of mass production to Western standards.
