Ukraine and the United States agree on an updated framework for peace - joint statement

Ukraine and the United States have prepared updated and revised framework document on a possible settlement of the war. This is stated in the joint statement, published after the conclusion of the Geneva round of negotiations (president.gov.ua).

The document notes that Any future agreement must fully respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within internationally recognised borders.

The Ukrainian side thanked the United States and the President Donald Trump for his diplomatic efforts to end the war and save lives.

Next steps

The parties agreed that:

  • work on the proposals will continue in the coming days;

  • Ukraine and the United States will remain in close contact with their European partners to develop a coordinated position;

  • Final decisions will be made by the Presidents of Ukraine and the United States.

This indicates that the negotiations have moved to the highest political level.

Context.

The statement is the result of a series of intensive consultations between the US, Ukraine and European allies, who are simultaneously promoting their own proposals and amendments to the future document.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier said that the US had made «significant progress» in Geneva, and the updated working version of the plan includes proposals from all parties involved.
