Ukraine lacks $750 million for gas purchases
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine currently does not have the full financial resources to ensure the purchase of the required volumes of natural gas. According to him, the deficit is about $750 million.
Insufficient funding before the heating season
Zelensky stressed that the government has already accumulated most of the funds needed for the heating season, but there is still a critical shortage to finalise contracts with gas suppliers.
“Ukraine must be ready for winter, but we lack about $750 million to fully finance gas purchases. This is a matter of energy stability of the country,” the President said.
International support is key to energy security
The President addressed international partners EU, US and international financial institutions, calling for assistance to Ukraine to cover its energy deficit.
We are talking about Possible allocation of additional loans, grants or concessional financing from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the World Bank.
Gas reserves and energy system risks
According to the government, over 14 billion cubic metres of gas have already been accumulated in Ukrainian storage facilities, However, this is not enough to fully ensure a stable passage through the winter without additional purchases.
Experts emphasise that Lack of funding could affect tariffs, the rhythm of gas supply and the stability of the energy system, especially in the event of new Russian attacks on critical infrastructure.
EU considers aid options
Brussels is considering the possibility of providing short-term financial support to Ukraine to cover part of the energy budget deficit. According to diplomats, the issue may be included in the new EU aid package being discussed in November.
