Space troops will be part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2025
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has decided to form a new kind of troops - the Space Forces. They will be part of the Armed Forces by the end of 2025 and will be responsible for the development of space technologies and the protection of the state in outer space.
What the project involves
According to government officials, the new branch of the army will have several key tasks:
development of satellite reconnaissance and navigation systems;
protecting critical infrastructure from cyberattacks and space threats;
development of own technologies for launching satellites;
Coordination with international partners in the space sector.
The Minister of Defence stressed that Space forces will become an important element of national security and will allow Ukraine to more effectively track the movement of enemy troops, coordinate actions on the battlefield and ensure stable communication.
International cooperation
Ukraine already participates in joint space programmes with the United States and the European Union. This includes the use of satellite data for military and civilian purposes, as well as the exchange of technologies in the field of space surveillance.
Experts emphasise that creation of Space Forces will be a logical step in the context of global trends. Separate space units already operate in the US, France, Japan, China and Russia.
Outlook.
The Prime Minister said that the first stages of formation would begin in autumn 2025. By the end of the year, it is planned to create a Space Forces command and determine the location of the main units.
The government is also considering training specialists in domestic universities and expanding funding for the space industry. This will open up opportunities not only for defence but also for the development of Ukrainian science and industry.
