Changes came into force on 16 October - USCIS data
US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) updated the programme rules Uniting for Ukraine, which allows Ukrainians to temporarily stay in the United States.
From now on, in order to continue participating in the programme, you need to pay an administrative fee of $1000.
The essence of the changes
Payment is available a prerequisite for consideration of an application for extension of humanitarian status. The USCIS explains that the fee covers the costs of security checks, data updates and programme administration.
Previously, participation in the programme was free of charge, allowing Ukrainians to stay in the country for up to two years at no additional cost.
Reaction of the Ukrainian community
The news caused a storm of indignation among Ukrainians in the United States. On social media, users emphasise that the new rules create an additional financial burden for refugees who have often lost everything due to the war.

About the Uniting for Ukraine programme
The programme was launched in 2022 to provide temporary asylum for Ukrainians, The programme is intended for people fleeing war. It provides for humanitarian entry to the United States for up to two years with the support of American sponsors, with the right to work and basic social services.
