Ukraine is ready for a ceasefire for the 2026 Olympics - MFA
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported that Kyiv is ready for a ceasefire with Russia during the 2026 Winter Olympics, but at the same time stressed: peace must begin now.
«If Russia needs an «Olympic truce», so be it. But we insist: the ceasefire must take place before the start of the Olympics,» said the Foreign Ministry spokesman. Georgy Tikhiy.
Ukraine's position on the ceasefire
According to Tykhyi, Ukraine supports the initiative to establish a general ceasefire during the Olympic Games, but will not see this as a delay.
Kyiv emphasises that it is ready for such a decision, but does not want to wait for “symmetrical pauses” from Russia again.
«We are ready not only for an «Olympic truce'», the spokesman said.
The Foreign Ministry also recalls that Russia has already used the “last moments of silence” during sporting events to carry out covert attacks, so the credibility of such agreements is in question.
Context of the initiative
Italy recently proposed to put to a vote at the UN the idea of Olympic silence for all conflicts, including the war in Ukraine.
This initiative was supported by Ukraine.
In particular, the MFA representative stated that such steps are aimed at not just a symbolic gesture, but also to encourage Russia to make a real peace.
