Increase in two stages
JSC «Ukrzaliznytsia» plans to significantly increase the cost of freight transportation in the next two years.
As reported by Federation of Transport Employers of Ukraine (FTU), the tariff increase will be 27% in 2025 and another 11% - from 2026.
Thus, the total growth will exceed 40%, which could be the largest increase in recent years.
Risks to business and the economy
The FRTU emphasises that such changes may negatively affect economic activity, The majority of Ukrainian companies are already operating at the edge of profitability.
«The increase in tariffs will inevitably lead to higher production costs, lower exports and may shut down some businesses, especially in the agricultural and mining and metals sectors,» the Federation said in a statement.
According to experts, some of the cargo may be transferred to road transport, This will increase the burden on roads and business costs.
Alternative - compensation for losses
The FRTU offers the government instead of raising tariffs to provide compensation in the state budget to cover losses from passenger transportation, which are currently financed by the cargo business.
According to industry representatives, this will allow Ukrzaliznytsia to balance its finances without putting additional pressure on the business and maintain the competitiveness of Ukrainian exports.
