US diplomat calls EU policy harmful to transatlantic partnership
A US diplomat sharply criticised the European Union's policy after the EU authorities fined the X platform (formerly Twitter) $140 million for violating the Digital Services Act. This is reported by Reuters.
Details of the application
Deputy Secretary of State of the United States Christopher Landau said that the EU's decision «contradicts the security interests of the West» and creates tensions in transatlantic relations.
According to him, European governments are simultaneously calling for a stronger US role in NATO, but «pushing regulatory policies that harm American companies».
«This is an inconsistency that cannot continue. It is impossible to demand security guarantees from the US while undermining the interests of our technology companies,» Landau said.
What was the reason
The EU imposed a fine on X on charges of:
misleading users through the blue-check system;
lack of transparency in advertising;
refusal to provide researchers with access to public data.
This is the first major fine under the new Digital Services Act rules.
Reaction in Washington
In addition to Landau, Brussels' decision was also criticised:
Secretary of State Marco Rubio,
Chairman of the US Federal Communications Commission Brendan Carr.
They called the EU's actions «an attempt at censorship» and «a regulatory blow to American business».
EU position
The European Commission stressed that the fine is purely regulatory in nature and aims to protect users from misinformation and fraud. They deny any political or anti-synergistic motive behind the decision.
Context.
Tensions between the US and the EU are growing as Washington reconsiders its role in NATO. The Trump administration is demanding greater financial and defence independence from European allies.
