Venezuelan Vice President calls on Trump to cooperate with the US

Vice President of Venezuela Delcy Rodriguez addressed the US President Donald Trump with a call for peace, dialogue and cooperation, declaring Caracas« readiness for »balanced and respectful international relations" with the United States and the countries of the region.

«President Trump, our peoples and our region deserve peace and dialogue, not war. This has always been the message of President Nicolas Maduro, and now it is the message of all of Venezuela,» Rodriguez said.

Change in tone of official Caracas

The new statement contrasts with the rhetoric used by the Venezuelan vice president just a few days ago. Back then, Rodriguez claimed that Venezuela «will never become a colony of any state» and called the US actions an «act of aggression».

The current appeal demonstrates a marked change in the position of official Caracas amid international pressure and diplomatic signals from the West.

International relations are a priority

According to Rodriguez, Venezuela is ready to prioritise the development of «balanced and respectful international relations» not only with the United States, but also with other countries in the region. She stressed the need to reduce tensions and move to dialogue as a basis for regional stability.

Context.

Relations between Venezuela and the United States remain tense over sanctions, legitimacy of the government Nicolas Maduro, and accusations of human rights violations. At the same time, recent statements by the Venezuelan leadership may indicate an attempt to revise foreign policy tactics in the face of international isolation and economic crisis.
