Power cuts may last at least three more years in Kyiv

Director of the Energy Research Centre Alexander Kharchenko said that power outages in Kyiv could last for at least three more years.

According to him, this forecast is due to the serious damage to the energy infrastructure suffered by the capital as a result of Russian attacks, as well as the length of the restoration work.

Reasons for long-term restrictions

Among the key factors affecting the stability of electricity supply:

  • damage to generating facilities and networks;

  • the complexity and duration of critical infrastructure repairs;

  • the risk of repeated attacks on energy facilities;

  • limited resources to quickly restore the system completely.

The expert stressed that even with active repairs, full stabilisation could take several years.

Context.

Following massive Russian attacks on Ukraine's power grid, schedules of emergency and planned power outages were introduced at various times.

The authorities and energy companies are continuing to restore damaged facilities, as well as working to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure and develop distributed generation.
