EU will not deport Ukrainian men - European Commission
The European Union is not currently considering the deportation of Ukrainian men of military age. The European Commission has stressed that they have the same rights to temporary protection as women and children.
Brussels emphasised that the temporary protection mechanism applies to all Ukrainian citizens who meet its criteria, without gender exceptions.
Details of the application
The European Commission noted that:
Temporary protection status in the EU does not depend on gender;
Member States did not receive recommendations on the forced return of Ukrainian men;
The current rules continue to apply as usual.
Thus, Ukrainians legally residing in the EU under temporary protection can continue to enjoy the rights provided for.
Context.
The issue of the possible return of men of military age is periodically raised in the public space against the backdrop of Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine.
The EU's temporary protection mechanism was activated in 2022 after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion and ensures Ukrainians the right to live, work, education and social services in the EU.
At the moment, Brussels sees no reason to revise its approach to Ukrainian refugees.
