Iran may dilute highly enriched uranium in exchange for lifting sanctions

Iran may agree to dilution of uranium stocks enriched to 60%, in exchange for complete cancellation of international financial sanctions, said the head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran Mohammad Eslami.

According to Eslami, it is a question of diluting the existing stockpiles, not transferring them to third countries - the option of transferring highly enriched uranium to another state is not being considered.

What exactly does Tehran offer

We are talking about uranium enriched to 60% - significantly higher than the level accepted for civilian nuclear programmes, but still below the level in 90%, which is considered critical for the development of nuclear weapons.

Earlier, the United States insisted that Iran give up uranium reserves exceeding 440 kg of material enriched to 60%, They consider this level to be potentially dangerous.

Context.

The issue of Iran's nuclear programme remains one of the main topics in relations between Tehran and Western countries. Iran insists that its nuclear activities are peaceful, while the United States and its allies are concerned that such levels of enrichment could be used for military purposes.

Negotiations on limiting Iran's nuclear programme and easing sanctions have been ongoing for several years and periodically renew the international community's interest in possible compromise solutions.
