During the first session of the 15th convocation of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK, the country's leader Kim Jong-un In. formally called South Korea the «most hostile» nation. He stressed that the South is the main threat to North Korea's security.
The statement was made in the context of rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula and ongoing military exercises between South Korea and the United States.
Formalisation of the position
This is the first time that North Korea has formalised such a position towards the South at the official level. Previously, such rhetoric was heard only in statements by individual officials and in propaganda materials.
Kim Jong-un made this statement after his re-election as Chairman of the State Council during the DPRK parliamentary session on 22 March 2026.
Context.
In recent months, tensions between North and South Korea have been on the rise. The DPRK regularly condemns joint military exercises between Seoul and Washington.
South Korea and the United States have repeatedly declared their readiness for dialogue, but Pyongyang responds only with threats and harsh rhetoric.
