Regulator accuses Meta

The UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has stated that Meta Platforms has failed to fulfil its obligations to prevent the placement of illegal financial advertising. More than 1,000 fraudulent ads were detected on Meta platforms in just one week. The FCA emphasises that Meta promised to solve this problem back in 2022. However, there have been no effective changes.

The scale of the problem

Illegal financial advertising continues to appear on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, according to the FCA. The regulator reports that:

- More than 1,000 cases were recorded in a week in February;

- Meta has received over 1,200 warnings from the FCA since 2020;

- the company has not implemented sufficient measures to combat fraud.

The FCA calls on Meta to tighten control over the placement of financial ads.
