Hungary announces investigation into transit of hundreds of millions of dollars from Ukraine
Minister of Foreign Affairs Hungary Peter Siyarto said that the Hungarian tax and customs authorities are investigating a case involving the transit of significant amounts of cash through the country.
According to him, it was an incident involving detained cash collectors who were transporting large amounts of money.
Data on cash and gold transportation
According to Budapest, they may have been transported through Hungary since January:
about USD 900 million in cash
approximately 420 million euros
146 kilograms of gold bullion
The Hungarian side called the situation a «shocking crime» and stated that it was necessary to find out the origin of the funds.
Budapest's loud accusations
Sijjarto also said that the detained cash collectors could have been transporting money from the so-called «Ukrainian military mafia».
At the same time, the Hungarian authorities have not provided public evidence to support such claims.
Ukraine denies the allegations
У Ukraine earlier called the Hungarian side's actions politically motivated and related to Budapest's domestic policy.
Kyiv also stated that it reserves the right to take diplomatic and economic measures.
