Starting from 28 March, shops, shopping malls and catering establishments in Egypt will operate on a reduced schedule. The country's authorities are trying to reduce electricity consumption amid rising fuel prices. Additional measures include lighting restrictions and a possible switch to remote work.
New rules for shops and cafes
Starting from 28 March, shops, shopping centres and cafes in Egypt will have to close at 21:00 five days a week. On weekends, establishments will be open until 22:00.
Previously, most shops and restaurants in the country were open until late at night. The new restrictions will be in place for at least a month and may be reviewed depending on the situation.
Additional cost-saving measures
The authorities also plan to switch off illuminated billboards and reduce lighting on the streets to the minimum safe level. Government offices will remain open until 18:00.
We are considering the possibility of introduction of remote work for 1-2 days a week for the public and private sectors. The aim is to reduce fuel and electricity consumption.
Context.
Egypt imports a significant portion of natural gas for electricity generation. The rise in global fuel prices is linked to the war in Iran.
In 2024, Egypt received $$57bn in international aid and devalued its currency. The country's authorities plan to review the restrictions in a month.
