The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has registered a draft law that introduces Responsibility for manifestations of Ukrainophobia<\/strong>. The initiative provides for both administrative and criminal sanctions.<\/p>\n The authors of the draft law emphasise that the aim is to protect the Ukrainian language, culture and national dignity from deliberate insults and humiliation. The document has already received the support of some members of the relevant committee.<\/p>\n The draft law proposes fines or imprisonment for actions or statements that humiliate the Ukrainian nation or devalue the struggle for independence. The punishment will depend on the severity of the offence.<\/p>\n The law provides for liability for publicly denying the existence of Ukraine as a state, as well as for insulting its language, culture or traditions. The details of the sanctions have not yet been made public.<\/p>\n The text of the draft law defines Ukrainophobia as hostility or contempt for Ukraine, its language, culture and statehood.
