Europe is seriously concerned about potential Russian aggression over the next two years, Politico reports. Despite rising defence spending, NATO and the EU are still not fully prepared to effectively deter the Russian threat.<\/p>\n

Europe records a new level of threat<\/h2>\n

These fears are growing against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine and uncertainty about the Kremlin's future actions. European experts and officials are analysing possible scenarios, emphasising the risks of the conflict expanding beyond Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Despite the increase in defence budgets, the EU's defence readiness map shows that the bloc will be able to reliably deter a potential aggressor only by 2030. This creates a significant time gap that Moscow can exploit.<\/p>\n

Hybrid scenarios instead of full-scale invasion<\/h2>\n

Experts believe that a full-scale ground-based Russian invasion<\/a> into a NATO country is currently unlikely due to the significant losses of Russian forces in Ukraine. However, the Kremlin may resort to so-called \u201chybrid\u201d attacks: the use of drones, sabotage operations in the Baltic Sea or the Arctic. The goal of such actions is not so much direct military success as increased division and doubt within the Alliance.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin's position: expanding the conflict as a strategy<\/h2>\n

The war in Ukraine<\/a> has significantly depleted Russia's resources, but this does not stop Moscow from seeking new ways to put pressure on the West. According to Politico, the Russian president may see the expansion of the conflict to other regions as a tool to strengthen his own position. This approach allows the Kremlin to avoid direct negotiations and at the same time create additional challenges for European security.<\/p>\n

In the context of a protracted war, the Kremlin seeks to force its allies to argue over the scale and nature of the response to provocations, which could give Russia additional room for manoeuvre.<\/p>\n

The growing tension around European security is of strategic importance for the entire continent. Scenarios of hybrid attacks or provocations in the regions bordering Russia could jeopardise NATO's unity and the effectiveness of collective defence.<\/p>\n
