Poland has cancelled the licences of 146 doctors, most of whom are Ukrainian citizens. The reason for this was the failure to meet the requirement of B1 Polish language proficiency, which makes it impossible for doctors to continue working without undergoing a complex procedure for recognising their qualifications.<\/p>\n
On 1 May, the Supreme Medical Council of Poland began a large-scale cancellation of conditional work permits for doctors who came from outside the European Union. As reported by Interia<\/em><\/strong>, The revocation of the licence involved 146 healthcare professionals, most of whom were Ukrainian citizens. The main reason for this was the failure to comply with the requirement to prove knowledge of Polish at a level not lower than B1.<\/p>\n The decision of the Medical Council means that these doctors lost the right to work in their speciality in Polish medical institutions<\/strong>. The licence can be renewed only after completing the full procedure of diploma recognition, internship and passing the LEK state exam, which makes it much more difficult to return to professional activity.<\/p>\n The Supreme Medical Council of Poland explains that knowledge of Polish is critically important for the safe and high-quality work of a doctor. At the same time, the Ministry of Health of Poland had previously proposed to temporarily ease the language requirements due to an acute staff shortage in the medical sector. However, the decision to revoke the licences was made precisely because of the lack of a confirmed level of language proficiency.<\/p>\n Temporary conditional licences issued since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine are no longer being issued. The current documents will be valid only until 2029, after which all foreign doctors will have to meet the standard requirements.<\/p>\n Losing a licence means not only losing their jobs, but also the need to undergo a complex and lengthy procedure to confirm their qualifications. This can lead to an outflow of Ukrainian doctors from Poland or to their retraining. For many, this is a serious barrier, as the process of diploma recognition, internships and the LEK exam takes time, financial and emotional resources.<\/p>\n On the other hand, the Polish healthcare system faces the risk of an increasing staff shortage, especially in regions where foreign specialists have worked. Restrictions on the issuance of temporary licences and strict language requirements may make it difficult to attract new doctors from abroad.<\/p>\n The massive revocation of licences for Ukrainian doctors in Poland affects not only the fate of individual specialists, but also the state of Polish medicine in general. Given the shortage of staff, this may affect the availability of medical services to patients.<\/p>\n For Ukrainian doctors, the decision creates significant obstacles to professional integration in Poland, especially for those who saved lives during the war and sought opportunities to work in their speciality abroad. The situation also highlights the importance of language skills for healthcare professionals planning to work in other EU countries.<\/p>\n The Polish authorities will have to find a balance between
