The Ministry of Health has announced the launch of military departments at medical universities starting next academic year. Graduates will automatically receive the rank of officer and the status of persons liable for military service, which will significantly change the system of training future doctors in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

How military departments will work in medical universities<\/h2>\n

According to the Ministry of Health, military departments will be introduced in medical higher education institutions from the start of the new academic year. Medical students will study under a special programme that includes military medical training<\/a> in parallel with the main disciplines. Upon graduation, graduates will automatically receive the rank of officer and the status of persons liable for military service, the Health Ministry said.<\/p>\n

The need for military medics has increased due to the war<\/h2>\n

Russia's full-scale invasion has demonstrated the critical need for professional military doctors. The healthcare system needs doctors who can work in combat conditions, evacuation teams and military hospitals. The departments will allow future doctors to gain basic knowledge of tactical medicine, military training and emergency response. Close cooperation with the Ministry of Defence and medical units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is also planned, according to MINISTRY OF HEALTH<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What will change for medical students<\/h2>\n

Studying at the military department will become a mandatory part of training for medical students. They will take additional classes in military medicine, and after graduation, they will automatically be included in the reserve of medical officers. The Ministry of Health emphasises that this will help create a personnel reserve for the defence system and disaster medicine. Details on the duration of training, the number of hours of training and the procedure for awarding ranks are to be made public after the relevant regulations are approved.<\/p>\n

Why it matters<\/h2>\n

The decision to establish military departments at medical universities will be one of the biggest reforms in the training of future doctors in recent years. Ukraine is creating a system in which doctors will be ready to work not only in civilian hospitals, but also in combat and emergency situations.
